I agree, this is what I would call Negative Space (if I were an expert). It's not distracting from your positive space (subject/rock). That rock is amazing and I do love this photo!
It looks like pacman! Great job with negative space! If you have a wider angle of this, try cropping it with the rock in one of the 4 corners, I bet it would really accentuate that negative space even more! It's interesting that even the ROCK has negative space!
